An incident off the waters of Somalia was reported where pirates tried to hijack a ship. The pirates failed to intimidate the crew and later abandoned their attempts to attack. This incident highlights the fact that ships should be bear in mind the dangers of the waters off Somalia particularly the Eastern coast and around Socotra. In order to reduce the risk of attack, ships should keep a distance of 50 to 100 miles away from the coast, and reduce radio transmissions which can be monitored by pirates.
