Oil spill at Houston Ship Channel

Members will be aware of the reports of a bunker oil spill following the collision of two vessels in the Houston Ship Channel on 22 March 2014.

Initial reports indicate that the collision involved a cargo vessel and a barge carrying a cargo of marine fuel oil. The United States Coast Guard has set up an emergency response and a large number of vessels have become involved in the clean up and containment operation.

As a result of this event a safety zone has been established which restricts vessel traffic in the affected area. Some vessels in the area suffered delays as a consequence in the area of the Houston Ship Channel. The Association also understands some vessels were concerned about possible hull fouling as a consequence of the spill. The Association's New York office has already been assisting Members with enquiries arising from this incident.

It is likely that a resumption of traffic in the area will be a phased process and Members at / or arriving in the area should keep close contact with the local Shipping Agents for the latest updates.

Any Member affected by this situation should contact the Association's New York office straight away:
