Pirates target livestock carrier

Pirates in three wooden boats boarded a livestock carrier last Sunday as it prepared to anchor off Jakarta in Indonesia it has emerged.

The ship's duty officer raised the alarm and the crew mustered on deck as the ship arrived at position 06° 02.9N, 106°  53.8'E at 00:45GMT.

However, the robbers were able to make their escape with an amount of ship's stores.
The master then reported the incident to local authorities.

Details of the attack, one of three that took place last week, feature in the latest report from the International Maritime Bureau Piracy Reporting Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Elsewhere twelve robbers armed with guns and knives boarded a container at Chittagong anchorage off Bangladesh on 13 August.

An attempted attack on a bulker at the Lagos anchorage off Nigeria on 9 August was the only other ncident reported from last week.

Seven men in an unidentified boat attempted to board the ship at its stern in location 06°  18.1'N 003° 16'E using hooks attached to ropes.

But the robbers aborted the attempt and fled empty handed at about 02:30GMT after the ship's crew raised the alarm and activated fire hoses.
